Here comes the Judge… here comes the Judge.

As a student, Peter a native of King City, led a full academic and athletic life. He participated in basketball, rugby, hockey as well as the Boys Athletic Association. After graduation, he attended the University of Waterloo for Human Kinetics and Leisure and followed that with his degree from Osgoode Law School at York University.

He was called to the bar in 1982 where he articled with Arthur Maloney, Q.C. Under his guidance, Peter was exposed to all facets of criminal law, highlighted by an appearance in the Supreme Court of Canada. He also participated in disciplinary proceedings before the Royal College of Dental Surgeons, the Judicial Council, and the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of Upper Canada. In 1984 Justice Tetley moved to Pickering as an associate, adding family litigation to his criminal defence practice. In 1987 he joined a firm in Whitby, one of the local agents for the Federal Department of Justice. He continued with his private practice, in criminal and matrimonial law, while maintaining part-time employment as an assistant provincial crown attorney, an appointment he had received shortly after his call.

The next stage in Peter’s legal career was the most significant to date. Effective the 16th day of September 2002, he was appointed to the bench by the Chief Justice of Ontario. He now presides in Newmarket.

Justice Tetley has been a member of the local Lions Club since 1984, on the board of management of the local community centre since 1990, assisted his former high school by being on the parent’s council and volunteered as a speaker on legal topics at KCSS and other schools. For the last twenty years he has been involved in youth sports and coaching and particularly enjoyed his role as legal representative and advisor to National Hockey League player Jeff O’Neill of the Carolina Hurricanes.
